Highlights from World of Concrete 2013

Industry Insights Commenti

Optimism filled the Las Vegas Convention Center at this year’s World of Concrete (WOC), the annual masonry and construction trade show held in early February 2013. Tom Cindric, group director for event organizer Hanley Wood Exhibitions, said: “It’s been a good show. Last year, the parts business was big because companies needed replacement parts, but this year, it’s more about new machinery. Exhibitors are very optimistic.”1

Ed Sullivan, Chief Economist for the Portland Cement Association, echoed Tom Cindric’s message of optimism during a special forecast at WOC, predicting an 8.1% growth in cement consumption in 2013.2

Almost 1,300 exhibitors—including Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers—showcased their products and services at the 11th annual show, up from almost 1,200 exhibitors in 2012. The show covered more than 605,000 square feet of exhibition space. In total, close to 55,000 visitors attended WOC, up 8% from 2012. 1

Hanley Wood recently announced plans to launch World of Concrete India, with the first show scheduled for October 2013.3

A steady stream of people visited the Ritchie Bros. booth in Las Vegas. We met a lot of people interested in learning about buying and selling heavy equipment at our auctions and ran into quite a few familiar faces. We also got to do what we do best: run an auction.

2012 Mack Granite truck equipped with a 10.5 cubic yard McNeilus mixer was sold at the annual CIM Fundraising auction held during World of Concrete.

We helped sell a number of unique donated items at the CIM Fundraising Auction, including this 2012 Mack Granite truck equipped with a 10.5 cubic yard McNeilus mixer. The auction raised US$546,250 to support post-secondary education through the Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program.

We also took time out to enjoy some other events at the show, like the John Deere Operator Challenge in which experienced drivers complete tests of speed and accuracy involving 4WD loaders, skid steers, backhoes and excavators.

Not to be out done, Western Star Trucks ran the Western Star Serious Trucks Challenge. Drivers had to negotiate tight spaces and perform tasks such as pouring concrete.

And what’s a concrete show without a concrete spreader race?

Many companies use World of Concrete to showcase new products and services. An entire hall was devoted to material handling equipment. The latest shiny models of trucks, loaders, backhoes, mini-excavators and cranes from many well-known manufacturers filled the Central Hall at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The Caterpillar display was one of the largest at the show: 5,000 square feet of new Caterpillar-yellow earthmoving and lifting machines featuring CAT engines which meet Tier 4 Interim emission standards.

One of the most innovative items we saw, coincidentally, made WOC’s own ‘Most Innovative Products 2013’ list. The Gehl King V400 skid loader by Manitou Americas is not only one of the largest skid loaders in the world, but features a lift path that follows a vertical line rather than the typical “S” path of most loaders. The Gehl V400 has a lifting capacity of 4,000 lbs. and a true vertical-lift height of 12’ for easy loading of trailers and trucks.5

Kubota Tractor Corporation introduced three new excavator models at the show. The KXo40-4 and KX0184 are compact excavators and the U35-4 is a tight tail swing compact excavator, a five-ton cab on a 3.5 ton machine.

Las Vegas, Nevada-based Xtreme Manufacturing revealed its biggest telehandler, the XR4030, which has a lifting capacity of 40,000 lbs, a maximum lift height of 30 feet and a forward reach of 16’4.4

French aerial platform manufacturer Manitou showed off its rotating telehandler, the MRT2150. The machine’s continuous turntable design allows for fast and precise positioning. The MRT2150 has a lifting of 11,023 lbs. and a lift height of 67’7”.4
