Columbus auction shaped by major pipeline players like David Oliver.
The Ritchie Bros. auction in Columbus, OH on Sep 28-29 is shaping up to be a game changer for the pipeline industry. With a staggering 160+ pipelayers, 80+ dozers and other support equipment available, this will be Ritchie Bros.' largest-ever pipeline equipment auction.
The majority of the auction's inventory is coming from two of the longest-running pipeline companies in the United States—Sheehan Pipeline Construction Company, in operation for 100+ years, and Oliver Pipe & Equipment Inc., in business for 85+ years.
Some will be quick to point to a downturn in the oil and gas sector for the surge in pipeline equipment selling, but that isn't the case for David Oliver, CEO of Oliver Pipe & Equipment. David says it's simply the right time to move on to the next stage of his life.
"I am blessed to be a part of the industry," said David. "It's a perfect time to sell. I am ready to retire and move on to the next chapter on my life. I'm only 58 years young and I don't know what that next chapter is, but I'm looking forward to it. It's a little scary … but I've never been more proud to put some equipment in an auction. It's in very good condition."
The Ritchie Bros. reputation
David's grandfather started Oliver Pipe and over the decades it grew from trucking to pipe and heavy equipment leasing, with one of the largest equipment fleets in the U.S. But without a younger generation to succeed him, and having recently refurbished his inventory "bumper to bumper" over the last year, David says the time was right to call Ritchie Bros.
"Ritchie Bros. has been very good to me," said David. "I had a long relationship with my Ritchie Bros. reps, and they knew it was a hard decision for me. With the reputation of Ritchie Bros. You feel comfortable placing it in an auction and getting the best return. Their reputation and the way they work for me and listen to me ... I decided that was the best route for me."

Bursting with pipeline equipment
There are currently more than 1,500 equipment items and trucks listed to be sold in Columbus, with no minimum bids or reserve prices. Bids can be placed in person, online in real time and by proxy. Robert Riess, President & CEO of Sheehan, says there's only been two or three auctions like this in his "37 years in this business".
David is equally impressed with the volume of pipeline equipment. He sees this as a huge opportunity for pipeline players to buy – whether for a quick need or for long-term planning. He believes the industry will bounce back, as it's the "heartbeat of the gas line industry".
"Never thought I'd live long enough to see a sale like this" he said. "The industry is changing and I know the industry is going to pull through and be bigger and better. Any industry has its ups and downs. This is a good opportunity for somebody who needs the equipment. Whether they need it now or in the next year or two, this is the sale to buy."
